Mt. Battie

On Monday we climbed to the top of Mt. Battie, just outside of Camden. It’s billed as “the highest peak on the mainland North Atlantic seaboard”, which is kind of stretching it for honors, but the views were stunning.

“Cairnopolis.”

“Cairnopolis.”

Best of all was pointing to the islands in the distance and saying, “We might go there, or there, or there….”

Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote “Renascence” here when she was only 18 years-old. It begins:

All I could see from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked the other way,
And saw three islands in a bay.

We came down a more shallow carriage trail on the far side. It spit us out on the side of a highway, so we had to hoof it for a couple of miles against truck traffic to get back into town. “This is less scenic,” Soren noted. All was solved with ice cream though.
